After coming back a few times I'm really digging more on Avenues Proper. Service and food are not always 100%, but it's consistently close enough to do, and the beer menu is really fun. Just had the biscuits and gravy and the Aves St. Fair. Woah Nellie! Very nummy indeed, well-seasoned and moist, substantial biscuits to boot.

The smoked Utah trout tartine small plate was amazing!! Had the chicken and waffles for the large plate and was very good. Next time I might just order 3 smoked trout tartines and call it good. Definitely worth my time seeking out this restaurant.

This place was worth seeking out. I had never ventured out to the Avenues, so it was a neat walk from downtown passing some old buildings and cool houses. A nice uphill climb to get your workout in before feasting at Avenues Proper. Many of the reviews commented that the prices were too high, which might be the case for SLC but I didn't think it was bad especially for the quality of the food. They have a great menu with so many choices. I started with the heirloom salad which was quite good - small enough for one as an appetizer but could easily be shared while waiting for your main meal. I went for the spicy chicken sandwich which was super flavorful. I liked the mixture of spicy with the coleslaw and pickles. During my meal I tried the 8 different house beers via the 2 at a time small taster samplers (Utah law limits flights of beer to two at a time). I liked the Hopspital Session IPA the best and the Proper Ale and Little Sister both good. Others were unremarkable but drinkable. I wish they had a stout, but I guess it's not fall/winter yet. I will definitely come back to try either the burger or the chicken and waffles.

Finally visited Avenues Proper for brunch! Stopped by around 1PM (is it still considered brunch at that hour?). There was no wait and we were immediately greeted and seated. We opted to sit inside but patio seating was also an option. The decor is minimalist and modern, as expected. There was also a brewery, if you're into that kinda thing. The server was very knowledgeable and answered our questions about the chicken in the waffles and biscuit sandwich. I was thrown off because it's a chicken sausage(?!) that they make in house. It's basically ground chicken seasoned and formed into a patty and fried. I definitely had my doubts going into it as I've never heard of that before. But I was proven wrong very quickly, as my biscuit sandwich was delicious and the chicken was generously seasoned but not over the top. The only thing I will comment on is the portions are kind of small. I had a really sad helping of potatoes in my meal. It's not a big deal as the food was delicious but something I noticed. There are also $3 mimosas for brunch. Wasn't in a drinking mood, but I'd like to try when I go back.

First time at Avenues Proper and it was a lovely brunch, even after noon. We all enjoyed the eggs in various forms: Proper, Benedict, and Burrito. The Bloody Marys are tasty and cheap at $3 each! There's a lot of kale on the menu, but for those anti-kalers like myself, they'll make your order without it! Loved the Hollandaise pesto sauce on the eggs Benedict!

Avenues proper offers a sophisticated yet laid back atmosphere. I ordered the kale Caesar which was delicious and well prepared! Although the restaurant has an awesome beer selection, they also prepare a speciality gin and tonic which has been the best I've had in slc! The staff was also a pleasure to be around. The host Tai frequently checked in to see how everything was and was very attentive. Bartender John had great conversation, pleasant attitude and knew the menu well! Am definitely going back!

I see some complaints about the prices in other reviews. Understandable, but coming from Austin, Texas, Avenues Proper seemed totally average in price. Maybe I'll change my mind after I live in Utah for a while. Anyway, the food here was terrific. We ordered the spicy popcorn, house pickles, trout tartine, and roasted beet salad. The salad was the biggest standout with really excellent cheese and sweet/savory granola. The tartine, while a little pricey at $11, was huge and heaped with smoked trout. I could have eaten bowl after bowl of the addictive popcorn. We actually expected to order more food, but after the tartine we were both full. We also tried several beer samples, including almost all of the house beers. They weren't the best in Salt Lake, but they were very good, especially the English golden ale. There's also a good selection of guest taps from other local breweries. I appreciated the atmosphere here. Even though it was a Friday evening, the place wasn't packed, and we were seated immediately. There were enough tables that we didn't feel cramped or crowded even as the restaurant filled up as the evening went on. Again, coming from Austin, I was impressed with how a relatively quiet, comfortable atmosphere was maintained here. I'm used to shoving my way up to a crowded bar. Our server was extremely efficient; he had that knack for showing up at exactly the right moments without hovering that marks an experienced waiter. The lighting was good and I liked how the dining space was split in half by the brewing equipment, making for a more intimate space on either side of the bar. We'll definitely be back here for a meal and for drinks when we come up to Salt Lake from Orem.

Finally went back for lunch, and while it is still a costly affair, much of the nonsense has been culled in favor of a simple menu full of goodness. They serve a downright proper burger cooked to medium rare as if they actually understand what those two words mean together. You really really should add the egg. Squeezing my burger until that sunnyside yolk popped and spread throughout was unreasonably enjoyable. Also, the session IPA is a good sign that the runaway train of over-hopped 9% IPA bombs is slowing down. These guys brew moderate octane beers with a purpose, not like it's a concession to the local theocracy. Didn't hate the dessert fritters, either. Nice setting, nice folks, good brew, and solid grub priced $2 too high.

Love this neighborhood spot for awesome food with a great vibe. We haven't ordered anything we haven't loved. Kiddos especially love the burger and the chicken & waffles.

I found the food hit and miss on my last visit. This time my husband and I sat in the bar for a glass of wine/beer and shared some frites. They have a decent cocktail and wine list- wine by the glass is mostly $9-13. The bar has lots of small tables for couples and groups. They also have a quality local beer list which includes their own brews. My husband enjoyed the salted caramel porter which is made with salt in the brew and creates a unique flavor but does not taste too salty. Stop by for a drink.

How many hostesses have you met in Utah that think they are so much better that you are because they control when you get a seat at a hip restaurant? That's how it started & it went down hill from there. The waiter also brought me the wrong drink on my first order, forgot my second order, & didn't even bother to bring my third order. Disappointing because it's clear that someone puts a great effort into this place.

Avenues Proper ends up being a bit greasy no matter what I order. I've stopped coming in because the price is too high for what you get. That said the Wait Staff is awesome, the food is good, and the idea of having restaurants in the neighborhood is always appealing.

Avenues Proper is probably my favorite brunch spot in SLC. The atmosphere is very trendy but not overly so like somewhere like Rye. It's a gorgeous little space. So first of all, our server was Ellie and she was definitely one of the reasons we love this place so much. Outstanding service, very attentive, and despite how busy she and the restaurant were we never had that impact us negatively. The chicken and waffles is the most amazing chicken and waffles I've had, and I'm from the south (roll tide). So that and their spicy chicken sandwich are what I will get each time I go there. Oh and the frittes are amazing. And the breakfast sandwich. But really though, their chicken and waffles are what I dream about now. Plus did I mention they have 3$ mimosas and bloodys on the weekend?

Well it was just great food. We had the club sandwich and the kale Caesar salad. We split them. That sandwich was just exquisite. Fresh, tasty and not the run of the mill sad ham and turkey on toast that you would expect. There's some kind of dressing or sauce or something in it that made me want to pick the plate except we were in public and so that would be frowned upon. The salad was also incredibly tasty especially because I HATE KALE. But I would eat that every single day if I could. My friend had a beer that she drained, pronouncing it tasty and lovely. Go here. We will be back for sure.

The Proper Burger was good, fresh patty and good bun. Tomato jelly was unusual but tasted pretty good. The fresh cut fries were very good. My wife enjoyed the fish and chips. Service was pretty good but could have been a little more attentive. We waited for drinks a few times. The restaurant was also very noisy inside making it a little difficult to carry on a conversation. Overall a good dinner and an enjoyable experience. Would like to go back and try some other menu offerings.

Read about this place on my flight to SLC and was pleasantly surprised to have 5 delicious dinners. No matter what you order get a side of french fries. Great low key vibe people are cool. Awesome place for a casual lunch or dinner.

What an amazing neighborhood gem! Was able to get same-day reservations for later on a Friday night and I am glad we did because the restaurant was quite full. It's in a really cute neighborhood in town, and there is plenty of free parking. I had the chicken and waffles plate, and the chicken was essentially chicken-fried chicken sausage (patties, not links). It was a different approach but really great, especially with the two fried eggs. The thyme-infused maple syrup was really great and definitely brought the plate further away from breakfast-fare. We liked it so much, we went back for brunch on Sunday and that was even more delicious - I had the farmer's breakfast (with the eggs benedict) and it was really great. It was nice to find a restaurant that had such a focus on freshly prepared food but was not overpriced or overstuffy!

Atmosphere: Pretty darn good. Clean and modern feel. Service: Reasonable speed. Friendly servers. No over-checking or interruptions. Food: Friend chicken and waffles. Farmer's eggs Benedict with pork belly. Not bad on both accounts. Not my favorite eggs Benedict version (for SLC, that goes to Roots Cafe), but certainly nothing I wouldn't happily eat again. The spuds (breakfast potatoes?) were also tasty. The bloody mary is quite spicy, but the price is spot on. Overall: Solid choice for brunch. Interesting and satisfying selection that will not leave you hungry.

Nice location right next door to Hatches! It's a nice drive through the cute avenues too. We went on a weekend so it was busier than what I expect is the normal. The service was super slow and noticed that only one waiter was working the entire dining area. Which seems odd for dinner time on a weekend! The Playlist they had was awesome and nice to listen to while I waited for what seemed like forever for my burger! I got the "Proper Burger" & added bacon. It was the best burger I've had in a while! The bacon was cured and cooked in a scrumptious glaze and I wasn't expecting that. It was almost like pork candy! I enjoyed every bite and cleaned my plate. The food was delicious, but service was crap, noise level was deafening, seating could be better with early reservations. I unfortunately was seated next to the door and when anyone came or went I got the January breeze! :(

Better to drink here than eat here, imho. Been here twice for dinner, thought the $15.00 burgers were good, fries not so much, and service leaves much to be desired. I wouldn't mind just enjoying a beer and an appetizer (most of which involve some variation of their mediocre french fries) on their patio, but I won't be lobbying to go here for a meal.

I went here for brunch, and I was so happy with every single thing from walking in, to leaving. I judge brunch by a good benedict--Avenues Proper delivered. Their benedict has kale, heirloom tomatoes and I opted for the pork belly. Absolutely delicious. The server was super sweet and on top of the service. The bloody mary was great--and this is coming from someone who does not usually drink bloody mary's. The ambiance is perfect. The staff is nice. The food is great. It was reasonably priced. I can't wait to come back here for dinner and drinks.

This is a nieghborhood joint, the parking is minimal and the place is small. The food is good, but its just not quite as good as the price dictates it should. I've got no problem paying a premium when the food matches it. Avenues Proper is just not good enough to charge what it does. When my wife and I want to go somewhere close (walking distance) but keep the experience nice we keep this place top of mind. Otherwise get your money's worth downtown.

An amazing dinner at Aves proper! Jackie took really good care of us. And the, Food was out of this world! Beer is a must try and so are the chicken and waffles! Will not be disappointed!

Left a lot to be desired. I had the roast chicken and what was described on the menu was not what came out on the plate. The mashed parsnips were sticky and stale and the chicken was tough and dry. Missing the picked tomatoes and spinach and kale that was on the menu and not substituted without an up sell. French onion dip was good but could do without the addition of the caviar. I really enjoyed the house made potato chips but didn't get enough for the dip.

Veggie Burger + Bacon = Heaven (Though the ghost pepper cheese is so good that I bet vegetarians like this also). Great staff. Friendly and attentive. Haven't had a single bad experience. Ever. It's why I come in, kick the dust and salt off my boots, and enjoy a nice slowdown meal. Pros: great house beers, broad but not complicated / self-important menu, service and staff, and parking (if you don't live nearby) Cons: Bar side tends to be a bit quieter than it feels like it should be for a neighborhood joint.

My friend and I ordered two mixed drinks - one supposedly made out of watermelon and the other one described as an alcoholic arnold palmer. When they brought the drinks they were both an unappetizing beige color. We tasted them and they both tasted like warm piss. They were undrinkable! We apologetically told our server that we did not like the drinks and asked for a glass of wine and a beer instead. My friend ordered the beet salad which she said was fine. I got the gnocchi which were extremely salty. The whole time we were there we got very little attention from our server. When she brought our check we were surprised to see that we had been charged $21 for the two drinks we had sent back even though we had each only had one sip. Since the server seemed to have abandoned us, I went to the maitre d's station to point out the mistake. I was surprised when the maitre d said that they had tasted our drinks and they had been prepared correctly therefore we would have to pay for them! I asked why they hadn't told us that before and then the woman said she had told the server to tell us and then she proceeded to lecture me on the fact that if a drink is prepared correctly the customer has to pay for it even if he/she does not like it. She was extremely rude. Luckily she finally agreed to take the drinks off the bill. As we left she said "Don't come back." This is the first time in a long time that I have been treated so badly at a restaurant. The drinks were absolutely terrible and the food was so-so and overpriced.

I'm giving 5 stars for food and atmosphere. The chicken and waffles dish is amazing, The only thing that would make it better would be a small arugula salad on the side. The waitress seemed a little spaced out, but was kind and made sure the waters were always filled.....That's a huge plus when you're hungover! Can't wait for the brunch menu for Saturdays!

Love this place for brunch. Service has been good, the food is delicious and the mimosas are 3 dollars. I will come back again and again. Both times I had the Benedict, and it is fantastic.

Pretty impressed with the food and atmosphere. Got the proper breakfast and enjoyed it thoroughly. My friend got the eggs Benedict and the hollandaise sauce was to die for. Awesome 3 dollar bloody Mary's. They were a bit busy and it took a bit for coffee and drinks. Otherwise great time.

For the last year since getting their new chef, this place has been consistently very good. It's a reliable staple. Good menu, bar (with sports) or restaurant are both great
I have been here twice now and both times the service has been horrible. The first time the waitress wasn't friendly and took forever to take our order, bring our food etc. she never once filled my drink up with more water, I had to drink others by me. Then we thought we would give it another shot with friends and it was worse. The waitress never came to take out order. We waited 15 min. While we watched her chit chat with the hostess.. She finally glanced at us and we waved to her that we were ready and she turned back to the hostess ( blonde with glasses) to continue talking. Then she walked right passed us ignoring us and went to the back with the hostess. So we left. The hostess came out right as we were leaving and we told her and she didn't seem to care. It's like a bunch of kids running this place with bad manners. Both times we were there it wasn't even busy, there was no excuse for her to not take our order. We will not be back.

This receives 3 stars due to the following reasons. The Food is over priced. A breakfast burrito on a fancy plate is not worth $10. It was the size of a $5 burrito from del taco. And the location is just awful, granted that is minor but due to the location seating is very limited. Furthermore, I was seated and not provided service or refreshments until about 10 minutes later. The pros: the staff were friendly and very personable. The food was very delicious. The beer selection was robust yet not overwhelming. The house beers are pretty good. The overall environment is very relaxing and welcoming. My waiter was on point, polite, and helpful in pairing. Overall, I'd go again for the beer. But for food, I'd pay less else where for equally delicious food.

Holy Pork Carnitas Enchiladas!!! Wow, has this place gone from overpriced good to fabulous give me more!!! Food is still excellent but their small plates are the best deal in town. Kudos to Proper!!!

This was my first time here and the experience was excellent. The host and waitstaff/bartender (Leif) was on top of it and took care of our party of 15 tremendously. We had chips, fries, pork belly appetizer, pickles, and their burgers. The food was excellent and the burgers were cooked to appropriate request. Andrew the GM was also very attentive and checked up with us multiple times to make sure we were being taken care of. Again, fantastic service. Will definitely be back with more friends. Also recommend trying their house brews. This place will be even better once they obtain a full bar license from the DABC. (Utah's legislatures need to pull their heads out of their asses and get with the times in regards to alcohol laws) Highly recommend. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Unfortunately a friend and I were not able to sample the brunch. Help me understand your process here....you tell me there's a 30 minute wait, yet my friend and I were the only person waiting at the door, there was 2 available tables and 3 spots open at the bar. To the hostess....30 minutes to wait for what??

I really like this place, the food is fantastic, the decor is warm and welcoming, and the drink list is excellent. The first time I was here I was a huge fan of everything, but I went again last night and I have to say, the service was not nearly what I'd experienced a few months earlier. The restaurant was 1/2 empty and yet we were rushed through our meal as if there was an hour long wait-list standing around outside. It was unfortunate, really put a damper on what was otherwise a fabulous experience. I'll probably go back, the food really is amazing, but for the hour long drive to get there it really would've been nice to have felt welcomed to sit and relax instead of being rushed through like a fast food joint....that's the only reason for the 4 stars, otherwise I'd give 6!
Although I didn't have a 5 star experience Avenues Proper, I'm optimistic that their food will get better over time and they'll earn the additional star. Before dinner, I tried one of their pale ales - adequately good , but not great; duck fat popcorn - tasted OK, but didn't really live up to the hype in other reviews; and a manhattan - very well done. For dinner, I had the brisket which was very good and I would highly recommend. The service was friendly and our server was knowledgable about the menu but would disappear for long stretches and it took almost 5 minutes for her to initially greet us. Overall, I had a good experience and I'll definitely go back.

I dropped into Avenues Proper with a buddy that lives in the area for a late night beer and dinner. For 3.2 beer, it was pretty good. The oatmeal red and coffee stout were both tasty and a solid option for anyone that likes a red or stout. The food was more proper than most pub food in a few ways. It's more on the fancy side than the pub side both on presentation and taste. I mean how often do you get chicken and waffles with an sunny-side up egg on it? The food is good and worth stopping in even if you're not into the beers. Cool little neighborhood brewpub with solid beer and proper food. Oh and they have TVs in the bar so you can ignore the person you came with and watch the game like you really want to.

I've reviewed Avenues Proper before, i'm loving this place! They have really pulled it together, the sunday brunch on the patio is PERFECT! The bloody mary is a great way to start, every item on the menu is delicious it's hard to choose between the Chicken and Waffles (a favorite of my'n) or the Italian Scramble (I get my' n with Prosciutto), the Proper Breakfast is perfect after a late saturday night. The drinks, the food the service have been amazing. I highly recommend this place for Sunday brunch! Great Job Avenues Proper!!!!

Avenues Proper & Publick House-- a brewpub / gastropub / bistro / tapas / late(r) night place, not just for Avenues dwellers. The food is overall very, very good. Tiny plates, like duck fat popcorn and "pickles" to small plates like artichokes grilled with gruyere, to larger plates like artichoke gnocchi, the place offers Proper food. A few misses -- the "pretzel" is really just a half dozen dough sticks served with mustard. It looks (and tastes a little) like they went to the Olive Garden and used a Shrink-O-Ray on the Italian chain's famous breadsticks. Definitely not worth $3. And the "pickles" turned out to be about 9 pieces of various pickled vegetables. The green beans were delish with tons of dill, the cauliflower were kind of limp and lifeless. Our gnocchi was fluffy soft with deep butter and artichoke flavor. And other plates we saw come out looked great. But the real star of the show here is the Chicken [sausage] & Waffles. It's a perfectly cooked, soft, rich waffle topped with a sweet, savory, and a little sage-y spicy chicken sausage that's breaded--I'd call it "chicken fried,", topped with a perfectly cooked, slightly salted, oh-so-yummy-runny-yolk quail egg, surrounded by perfect maple syrup. The normally awesome sweet and savory pairing is really kicked up a notch with the addition of the creamy egg and the spices bursting through the chicken sausage, making an awesome dish much more complex and even more rich. My wife really wanted to not be a vegetarian and try the sausage, but the egg, waffle, and syrup were even enough for her. Everyone should shout this dish from the rooftops. it's one of the really "special" dishes I've had in SLC. Drinks weren't crazy expensive, and the signature drinks looked good. We both had local beer (a decent selection on tap and in bottles), since Proper's beers are not yet ready. As others have said, the ambiance is much more gastropub than public house, with a small bar area followed by an open restaurant seating area, adorned with Texas Burnt Orange walls, purple hanging lights, randomly placed wood panels pointing you to the bathroom, and a few couches and a long, wooden half booth. Not bad, but not exactly the "comfortable" setting you might think of from the place's name. The Avenues has certainly craved any decent place north of 3rd Avenue, so it's busy, but we were able to get right in at about 8:30 p.m. on a Thursday. Otherwise expect a wait. People have commented on the prices: Yes, some of the small plates are pricey, but we ordered 2 of the smallest plates, 2 of the small plates, an entree, and 2 big beers, and our total bill with tip was about $70. Certainly not your every day dinner establishment, but not out of control pricing, either. 4.5 stars, rounded down to 4 because (a) their beers aren't available yet, (b) our server pronounced the double IPA from Red Rock as El-eff-EEE-no, instead of the proper El-eff-EYE-no. (The long "I" is right there on the label, people! And so is a picture of an elephant crossed with a rhino sitting on a hop!), and (c) serving hoppy beers from tulip glasses.

Came here when it first opened, and I was a little underwhelmed. Recently returned, and it seemed a lot better. I had a gnocchi that was fantastic, and saw several other items I want to try. The house-brewed beer was also great. Most of the other recent reviews seem really positive as well.

Where to begin!? First of all, the overall ambiance is fantastic, the selection of food is amazing, especially for any pub-type restaurant. I got the veggie burger with bacon, or a "hypocrite burger" as our waiter called it. DELICIOUS. My boyfriend got the Steak Frites, I tried a couple bites and was very impressed. The fries and aioli sauce they bring with them is almost scarily addictive. If you enjoy beer, they have a very wide selection and also will bring you little 2 oz tasters if you want to try them all. The service was excellent, and we just went last night and I am already craving those Pommes Frites!

I have to say I was skeptical...I don't know why...just was... Shame on me.... Great service from the time the door opened till I signed the check. Our server Page knew her product and process, sold with an easy charm and articulated affection for her workplace without the cloying Kool aid that often follows the company cheer The menu was not only well composed, respectful of its roots and engaging but executed without flaw and priced with both the customer and operators check book in mind We built a great meal with gnocchi, chicken liver pate, pork belly and awfully good fries. The Highland West paired flight of distilled and brewed was an excellent traveling companion through the plates humming the mantra of "zero palate fatigue" Excellent discovery Cheers

Tried the proper burger and of course i have to add bacon. It was great and cooked exactly how i asked for it. My friend had the chicken and waffles and he said it was five stars all the way. Its a beautiful building all the way! I will be happy to come back! Now to order some togo.

If you've been following my review, I was asked to come back after I gave my one star. Well, I'm glad I did. We had an outside table (luckily the weather cooperated) the services was excellent and the food was wonderful. I had the lamb meatballs and a heirloom tomato salad. VERY good. My book club thoroughly enjoyed our time there. It helped there is a chocolate store next door. Yummy. Very good experience and the fact that Andrew T. took the time to come to the table and check on us. And when I left he made a point of asking how everything was. It shows they really DO CARE about their patrons and listen when something isn't up to par. Now, had we gone and the service and food had been poor, I would have given another poor review. All I can figure is that my husband I went on a bad night, which turned out to be the exception not the rule. I'm glad I can't wait to return. Thank you for a lovely evening.

The first time we came here, I would have given it 5 stars. Finally! A delicious, local, close little place in the Aves to eat at! But I was wrong. In the subsequent 3-4 times we've gone, it's been sorely disappointing. Very expensive for what you're getting, slow service, bland flavors. Not worth it anymore. :[ But it started out so well! Maybe it can return to the glory days.

How have I not rated this place? We come here often and just realized I haven't rated on Yelp. Everything I've eaten here is absolutely top notch, from preparation to presentation to the premium ingredients sourced. I'm not sure how anyone could give this place less than a 4 star rating. Great local beer!!

What a wonderful neighborhood restaurant. The menu is fairly extensive and will allow for even the most picky eaters to find a dish the enjoy. They definitely have a foodie, hipster vibe. We started our meal with a couple cocktails. A leviathan and a whiskey cocktail with bulleit and a house cherry shrub, both were wonderful and went well with the duck fat popcorn. Next we split a green salad, shellfish frites, and chicken and waffles. The shellfish frites were mussels and they were amazing! The chicken and waffles were pretty awesome too! We tried a few samples of the house beer, all of them were great. All in all this is a great dining experience. There patio is really nice since 8th ave is a very calm street.

My first visit to A P was fantastic I had the turkey on rye, and my Husband had the Reuben and a couple of pints of some great beers. It has almost been a year since our last visit, it seems the care and attention to detail is lacking. I had the biscuit sandwich, basically a posh twist to biscuits and gravy, it was mediocre and when my food was brought out the gravy was cold, I informed the server and she took it back, only to bring me a hot plate back with still luke warm gravy. My experience over all was unpleasant, the service was poor and food not worth the price, save your money and disappointment and go somewhere else.

After hearing about how great this burger was, I had to go! A tad overpriced, and I definitely felt that way after I was done eating half of it. Came out a little undercooked, the bun was tasty, huge, and tomato jam was a little bland to others I've had in the past. Stood at the front for like five min before we got sat, quiet. Fine service, meh on the burger

I've been coming here for a while, so I guess it's time to write a proper review. This is one of my favorite restaurants in town. The food is excellent, and the beer brewed in-house is some of the most interesting in Utah. First the food: some of the standouts are the chicken and waffles, the burger, and the frites. The yagerschnitzel is also pretty damn good. Oh, and their soups are always very good. You really can't go wrong with whatever soup they have. Then there's the beer. Rio is the head brewer, and he's been on the Utah brew scene for years. He was the right-hand man at Epic for a while, and while I don't care for a lot of Epic brews, his Rio's Rompin' Rye was always good. The stuff he's making at AP is always interesting and almost always really good. The Hopsital IPA is a really well balanced IPA; a great session beer. The Firepit Porter has a great smoky flavor. And if you want something with a little kick, the Foreign Gentleman is an excellent coffee stout. AP gives brewery tours, and it's casual but you'll learn that Rio knows and loves his beer. The brews are always changing, which is a good excuse to come in every couple weeks or so. Ambiance/service: They've got a bar area and a restaurant area (and a patio in the summer). You'll get equally good service at either; I'm sure they're separated for ridiculous Utah legal reasons. The ambiance is upscale casual. I say upscale because it's the avenues after all, but all of the employees are friendly and chill. If you can score Britt as your server, you'll have a good experience. AP is getting more popular (as they should) so it's not as easy to just walk in there without reservations anymore, but I've done just that on a Saturday night and the wait was 45 minutes. Worth it, in my opinion. I don't live in the avenues, but I like the ground they're helping break when it comes to neighborhood brewpubs. I can only hope that something nearly as good comes to west capitol hill.

The food is really great here. Too bad the service is a little snotty (as with most new gastro places). Our server was short and annoyed that we were giving them business. I asked for no peppers in my burrito - which if they don't do food modifications I understand. But she told me there aren't any in the burrito then of course when it came there were tons. I would have gotten something else. She never checked on us during our meal, and we had to ask for coffee each time. Took about 30 minutes to get or food, which is fine on a Sunday brunch. But we were never checked on. I'll be going back to the Park Cafe where it's always hot, delicious, and the friendliest staff in town.

I'm a fan of this place, but I may be bias since I live right down the street. I've only had dinner here 3 times, but frequented the Proper much more often after work or after dinner for drinks. I was at their grand opening and met two owners (I think there are only two?). They were really pleasant to talk to and shared the same enthusiasm for getting cool local spots on the map for Avenues residents. Something that is harder than one would think due to the rules regarding alcohol here. With that said, my dinners were really good. Not great. This type of restaurant which seems to be very popular now (I guess it's in the Farm to Fork category), typically serves very good food in my opinion. But man, it is certainly costly. I am not one to shy away from an expensive meal. But sometimes it just seems a little ridiculous, especially regarding portions. I do NOT want bigger portions for the money, I would prefer lower cost for the same portion. Regardless of the dinner costs, if you just want o hang out here with some friends and share a pitcher, you have some great food options to go with it (as food is mandatory with drinks either way). Last night, I had the beer cheese frites, basically a delicious take on Poutine. Big fan. Duck fat popcorn, chicken and waffle, all great choices. The beer is also a great aspect of this place, since it is all made in house. I actually prefer the AP house beer, something that I think is more of an american lager style beer, but I tried a Belgian recently that I also found pretty tasty. All in all, I have not been disappointed by Rio and his crew. Service is always friendly and not-overbearing. They seem like they are genuinely happy to have you in and be a part of the neighborhood community. If you live in the aves, or SLC in general, support the Proper. You will not regret it.

Great beers. Always a different list. Pork belly and brussels sprouts were very well done. Sandwiches and burgers are very good. Steak frites are worth it.

All I needed after a crazy week was a perfect night out. Perfect food. Perfect environment. Perfect wine. Perfect light. Perfect service. Perfect pace. I got it all at Avenues Proper. Let's call it Avenues Perfect.

I've been visiting this place for brunch and finally made it for dinner. The dinner entres are as incredible as brunch. Try the Oatmeal Red, House Beer. It's one of the best beers I've ever had and certainly at the very top of the list for local beers. I'm thrilled that such an awesome place is located in the avenues, and makes a great addition to our neighborhood.

Healthy, affordable and best craft beer in town! I dined alone at the bar. The tv was a pleasant distraction. My first course was a bright and tasty beet salad with lots of nice flavors. Pickled and fresh beets with a crunchy granola topping over creamy cheese and fresh arugula. Second course I enjoyed a grilled corn on the cob with lime, cheese and salt! I love corn on the cob and rarely see it as a small plate option. $4 well worth it. (Toothpicks by the host stand) lastly the lamb meat balls. Large portion for a small plate! My pint of beer worked deliciously with the entire meal. Fever Pitch saison. Earthy saison yeast, dry cereal like flavor and nice spice aroma! Full and happy for $34. The restaurant is a short 5 mins from downtown where I live. I'll definitely be back for a date night or dinner with my friends! Two thumbs up!

I was excited to try this place because I just moved to the neighborhood and it looked delicious. Boy was I wrong. This was hands down the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. I was with my husband and we approached the counter and asked if we could sit outside. The hostess acted as if we were a total inconvenience to her day (the place was almost empty) she walked away with menus in hand, we asked "should we follow you" she replied in a annoyed voice "if you want". She sat us and slammed down our water glasses and proceeded to pour water all over the table then walked away without a word. If we were not displeased enough my this extremely bitchy greeting, we waited for a good 45 minutes for our meal (again nearly empty in the restaurant) when our food arrived my sausage was RAW in the middle, however i diddnt realize this until I had eaten most of it. I am pregnant so you could imagine my irritation at this point. We told the waiter and he said sorry and comped the sausage thats the only reason I'm even giving this place even a single star.

On the whole, my wife and I were disappointed in our first dinner here for a"parents night out". The fish sticks were good, though exceedingly small for the price. Service was fine, we sat on the bar side. I think our biggest disappointment is that like many others whom live nearby, we were hoping for more of a pub ambiance with everyday food and less of a "wanna be shishi" California fare. If this place makes it, it will be because of their avenues location and locals hungry for anything within walking distance. Its clear the owners did not want to be just another Squatters or Redrock, but a pub of that type is exactly what the collective "we" are hoping for.

I recommend resies and if you can get a seat outside you've scored! (They are first come...) I would think of this place more like a gastropub--not a regular cheap-o beer place. Extensive beer menu and decent wines for those of us who don't drink beer. Great food but if you're expecting well-presented, inventive food with fresh ingredients to be priced like Carl's Jr. you should go somewhere else. Try and few things! You'll love it.

Came tonight for their last night of ProptoberFest. The beer was amazing, the schnitzel was perfect....so perfect I actually ordered a second one! The salad was perfectly seasoned, a rarity as most restaurants rely on dressing to season. overall a perfect evening.
Avenues proper is awesome. I have eaten there several times now, for both dinner and brunch. All of my experiences have been excellent and I plan to continue eating drinking there as often as possible. The food is delicious and interesting. I have tried many dishes. My favorites are the fish sticks - perfect crispy beer batter breading and good cod, and the bubble and squeak - delicious fried cheesy potato things. The beer. What a great place for craft beer. The Proper ale, which they always have on tap, is a classic English style beer which really makes me feel like I'm back in an English pub. The Gose is a salty, sour beer that is an amazing experience to drink, very out of the norm and very good. Another great beer they have had is the Hopspital IPA, a deliciously crisp and hoppy creation. There are many more and they are always making new beers (I'm here now and they have 9, yes 9, of their own brewed beer on tap - very impressive IMO). I've also enjoyed excellent service consistently.

Perfect place to go treat yourself alone, with a date, or with a group. I really enjoyed the gnocchi I ordered. I had a great glass of French wine. The cocktail I ordered could have been a little more interesting, however, it wasn't bad at all. Duck fat popcorn was a hit! The atmosphere was nice, nice lighting, and not too loud. They brew there own Proper Beers, which my date was really into. I didn't try one this time around. The staff could not have been sweeter! The poor server who we asked to take pictures with our finicky phones was patient and turned out to get a great photo after multiple attempts. God bless her! One of the owners even came over to say hello and ask how everything was, he was really charming. I can't wait to come back again.

Avenues Proper is a great place to go for a fun night out. The restaurant feels warm, welcoming, and friendly upon entering. When we went it was a weekday evening and the place was packed-a good sign. The server was full of drink suggestions and we loved everything she brought. The Bee Sting cocktail was the standout drink of the night. We tried 5 or 6 different dishes and everything was great. The Heirloom Tomato Salad and the Steak Frites were our two favorites. The two star deduction is for the seating and the portion sizes. We were seated against the wall at a two top table literally inches from the tables on either side. This can be easily avoided by requesting a booth or a more secluded table when you make a reservation. The portions were extremely small in relation to the prices. The $16.00 gnocci was listed under large plates but it was a comically small portion. The $25.00 plate of steak and frites was a decent size but again not worth the price in relation the the serving size. Overall, Avenues Proper was a great meal in a fun environment. Will I go back? If you're buying!

First, the good: The ambiance is lovely. It's a tad upscale for the neighborhood pub they're presenting themselves as, but clearly a lot of care has been placed here. The patio is an outstanding place to have dinner. The service was friendly, attentive, and prompt. Unfortunately, the food was thoroughly unimpressive. AP prides themselves on their small portions, taking a tapas approach to pub food. An interesting idea, but we just kept it simple and ordered from the large plates menu. Perhaps that was our mistake. I had the burger, which I heard three separate staff members compliment themselves on (to us or others) during our visit. The $15 price tag certainly buys you pretentious ingredients such as tomato jam. Pretentious ingredients are fine if the it all adds up, but the flavor is what matters. I'd describe the flavor, but there's not much to describe beyond "uninteresting." I don't believe I'd spend $6 on this burger, which is flavorless and boring. That didn't stop our server from repeatedly informing me how privileged I just was to have had it grace my mouth with its presence. (Seriously, stop complimenting yourself yourself on your food! If it's good, it'll speak for itself.) I will say, at least, that the bun was unique and excellent. It's just a shame that what was within it was so forgettable. My dining partner had the chicken, which was similarly unremarkable. The chicken itself was cooked nicely... but again, there's not much flavor to describe here. I'm not a huge beer drinker, and didn't order any, so I can't speak to AP's beers. But neither of us walked away with a favorable impression of the food. Nothing was inedible, but if that's the best one can say, it's not a particularly pleasurable dining experience. And since you can reasonably expect to drop $25+/person on dinner and a drink, that makes AP a massive skip, in my book.

Very good food and friendly service. The beer selection is great. The bourbon and beer flight is worth trying. Wish the portions were a bit bigger for some of the dishes, but we've enjoyed every meal we've had here.

Great food. Chicken & waffles was savory and sweet! The gnocchi was interesting but amazing. Definitely worth a visit. Get the flight of beers and liquor. Don't question it, just do it.

Nice outdoor patio. Great beer selection. The chicken and waffles entree was pretty good, but I think next time I'll get the burger and frites. Good ailoli for the fries. I wouldn't recommend getting the bechamel cheese sauce on the burger (an extra $2 and not worth it), and, in fact, when I order my burger, I will ask for no tomato jam either. The side salad is just fresh greens and a balsamic vinaigrette (not a bad thing necessarily, but don't order if you are looking for something more exciting). The side of fries is huge and filling. And finally, they charge a dollar for each little taster, which I think is fine if the customer doesn't end up ordering a few pints and only drinks the tasters. However, I found it kind of silly to charge $1 for each taster when all I was using it for was to determine what pints to order alongside my appetizers, entree, and dessert. Felt kind of tacked on to the already sizable bill. Oh, and I didn't love the beer float dessert. Overall worth another visit, though I'll definitely order differently next time.

When AP first opened, I had mixed feelings. I think that was part that I think I had expectations on what I wanted AP to be and that they were a new restaurant with new staff, new menu, and new beer. Needless to say I was conflicted. Fast forward to now and I quite like AP. Yeah it's a little pricey but you can get away with a good meal for $15 after tip (chicken and waffles...get them, you won't regret it. Unless you are vegetarian. You'd probably regret it then). The food is really good. It's fresh and interesting. They put a lot of emphasis on buying local. I like that a lot. As for the beer...the beer at first was a little uninteresting but they are hitting their stride now with their subsequent releases of their main stuff and they are starting to do some really cool stuff. I love the Gose. If you are a fan of sours, definitely try it. It isn't a sour but I think you would like it. The Foreign Gentleman Stout was awesome too (done in with Charming Beard Coffee...keeping it local). And the Hopspital IPA with simcoe was top notch too. Lastly, the place has a cool vibe. Good place for a date but also a good place to come and watch RSL with your friends. AP is worth the time to scope it out. The owners clearly care about what they are creating. So support a local business that supports their local economy that makes awesome beer.

Pork belly was a great start. It's fried so it's crispy on the outside which was unique for me. I had the mussels which were brought in fresh that day and were good. I'm split between 3 and 4 stars because while my dish was good, my dining companions had the special - short rib gnocchi - and it came out tepid. I will bump it to 4 though because the server was very nice about it and the manager came by a few minutes later and offered to get new plates brought out. They took a little off the bill as well. Personally I wasn't sold on the whole wheat gnocchi. I know it was only a daily special, but to me gnocchi should be pillowy and the whole wheat made them dense and a little grainy... I don't think it was worth the health tradeoff for adding whole-grain. We also splurged and got a plate of the apple fritters. They were crisp and hot and light (for a fried dessert) and were easily shared so we didn't have to feel too guilty about it.

My husband and I were very excited about the new local restaurant and brewery opening in the avenues. We waited a couple months after Avenues Proper officially opened, so as to not base judgment on likely new-restaurant-type mistakes. The results: Overall interior feel: Cozy and clean. They have interesting modern decor, but strange diner-like seating. The service: Sufficient and punctual. The waitress (a pretty blonde lady) was friendly and knowledgeable about the food and drink menus as well interesting pairing options. The food: My husband and I were aware, BEFOREHAND, that Avenues Proper served relatively small portions. We went there knowing that. The accept-small-portions button was activated in our heads and bellies upon entering the restaurant. That being said, the Chicken & Waffles (small plate) and the Gnocchi (large plate) portions were considerably smaller than our already small-portion expectations. It was almost equivalent to three handfuls of food from a nine year old child. No kidding. Nevertheless, the food was beautifully presented and had above-average tastes. The beer: I'm not a super knowledgeable/experienced beer nerd, yet, and my preferences tend to lean toward stereotypical girly (lighter/sweeter) beers. So, anything that says "wild honey wheat" I am super on board with. Unfortunately, this wasn't one made by Avenues Proper, so I'm done talking about that. My husband, however, ordered a AP rye beer. It was rich and tasty, but had strange iron aftertastes. That could be a "thing" that I am unaware of. I'd like to go back to try and learn more about their beers as I become more familiar with the beer world. The prices: Whoamygosh. I don't know why their prices are so high. Are they getting THE finest ingredients from small, local, and organic family farms within a 30 mile radius? If so... I applaud them, but even then, I don't think their prices would need to be THAT high in order to earn profits. Overall: Avenues Proper is worth trying. I'm glad they exist, and I hope they continue to do well. Though, I think they'd gain more customers if they got rid of the hoity toity menu and prices, and served above-average/interesting sandwiches, pizza, burgers, etc.

Avenues Proper is a welcome addition to the Salt Lake restaurant scene...a neighborhood gastropub with a good vibe and (soon-to-come) good beer! Showed up on a Friday night and the place was busy with a few folks waiting outside...impressive since it's only been open for a few weeks. There was not much on the menu that I didn't want to order...since we were a table of 7, I tried many dishes. The carpaccio was perfection, but, the chicken and waffles...soooooo good! They make a chicken sausage patty and then "chicken fry" it. It's seasoned well and there are no bones to contend with! The shellfish of the evening was littleneck clams...which were delightful in a flavorful broth that was so good, it was "drinkable." The pate is also solid, this coming from someone who is not always a fan of pate! Also worth note is the grilled asparagus with a 60 degree egg, and the fish sticks! For main plates, I have to recommend the gnocchi...little airy pillows of goodness. Gnocchi are hard to get right...and they have done it! I almost order the fish of the moment, but ended up going with the steak frites on a recommendation from the chef and I was not disappointed. They source their ingredients as locally as possible and the beef is as good as you can find. Also, they grind their own burger meat...just thought you should know. We also tried the desserts - a stout float, a scoop of stout ice cream with chocolate shards and a goat cheese pie with beet ice cream! Order the goat cheese pie with the beet ice cream. Just do it! (or if they are already out of the pie...just head next door and support another local business - Hatch Chocolates) The service was attentive and pleasant, the space is new, but doesn't feel stark or cold. They have a good wine list and the signature cocktails are quite good as well - the bee sting and the orange whip in particular. They are fermenting their own beers right now, which according to the head brewer should be available in the next few weeks. Takeaway points: I'll be going back as soon as I'm back in town...and hopefully when their beer is in. Yes, the prices are not cafe'ish...but it is clearly not supposed to be a cafe - it's a gastropub...meaning a pub/gathering place with an emphasis on the food. If you're expecting nachos and chicken strips and pizza then head to Squatter's or Red Rock. If you are hoping for a nice experience with delicious and unique food offerings and good company...than this is the place for you.

Meh. On the positive, the atmosphere was wonderful, and the staff was very friendly. The menu was miniscule. They had only 5 entree's for dinner, and one of them was a hamburger. Seriously, a $5 hamburger that cost $15. I had their beer at the brewfest downtown, but unfortunately, they ran out of it at the restaurant. Yah, No brew at the brew pub. Thanks to the staff for trying hard. Thumbs down to the owner for not providing an adequate menu, or enough food for a hungry patron. I'm only 5'6" and weigh 140 lbs. I'm not a big eater, but the skimpy portion of gnocchi certainly left room for the overpriced desert, but I had enough and skipped it.

It's like walking in to a New Yorker cartoon, with the necessarily good-looking waiter offering absurdly over-described and over-detailed menu choices. Suitably uncomfortable chairs and bits of wood on the walls. But they offer really quite good food. Unsurprising salads, OK grilled asparagus, great Fish of the Moment (but points off for being so cute), chicken entree terrific, fish sticks likewise (really!). More points off: desert was a disaster. A one-note some-parts-hot-some-parts-cold attempt at a creme brule. Skip. More points off: the name -- Publick House. With a K. Cheesy. Oh, and the website is not enabled for all common browsers, just some. But we'll certainly go back.

My husband and I tried Avenues Proper after hearing good things from three separate couples. The atmosphere, location, and overall vibe is very unique and fun. The service was good - no complaints there. We ordered the pork belly appetizer - it was good, but not my favorite. I'm more of a fan of pork belly when it is warm and really melts in your mouth. This was served on the colder-side, but overall the dish was very tasty! My husband had the brisket and I had the portobello sandwich - both were delicious. Lastly, the beer. It was decent. I would not say the beer is up to par with places like Red Rock or Squatters, but it was decent. We will definitely go back to try different beers and other menu items (the chicken and waffles LOOKED amazing!!). UPDATE: I recently went back to Avenues Proper with a group of girlfriends and the service left a lot to be desired. We were there for over 2 hours on a Tuesday night - not by choice. It was the kind of situation where you wanted to order your next drink as soon as they sat one down in front of you because that's how long it would take to get the next one.

Had a wonderful cocktail here! It doesn't have a club license, so you've got to order appetizers to keep drinking, but luckily they're delicious. Pricy, but pleasant experience in one of the very few Avenues places to serve liquor. That was unheard of just a few years ago.

Avoid this place. They forgot my order for an hour and then served me a raw (think seared ahi but replace the ahi with ground beef) burger. Or think ground beef tar tar. I got through a few bites before it was "check please" (i.e. get me out of here). Oh and the food is very over priced. $18 for an uncooked bacon burger. I can't believe i gave them $37... slow service, unedible food, and they gouge you. i should have just gone to smiths and had my raw meat burger by the fountain machine...

This restaurant came highly recommended. My wife and I were visiting from Cleveland and we wanted to try something very local. I write this while we are ordering and trying out the cuisine... we are having a little fun. So far we have ordered the elk carpaccio and it is delicious. It comes with a cherry reduction and fennel. Delicious. Our second starter was the asparagus with egg very interesting and French! The egg is cooked at 140°F for up to three hours which gives it a very interesting consistency. Personally, it seemed no different than a raw egg to me... so I won't order it again. I asked for a little bread to help it out and it made the difference to me. The asparagus was grilled to perfection. Our main dish was gnocchi. It is made with baby artichokes fresh baby tomatoes, gnocchi potato which was wonderful sauteed in a little olive oil (nicely browned). It was a generous portion that we shared and really enjoyed. With regard to the ambiance, there are local paintings on the wall that are for sale so I assume they plan to keep it fresh, not only in food, but in art! We really like the paintings. The sound level of the restaurant was reasonable. A bit loud at first, but really not to many echos. I like that the mountain culinary tap water was served in a bottle as if it was bottled water at the source... but the SLC water is quite good and tasted... well no taste (perfect). We showed up the same night when the avenues were having a block party... it was in full swing the first day of summer 2013. They showed a movie on a screen mounted to to the top of the building... people sat in their lawn chairs on a hillside across the street. The movie was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Free popcorn! The service was excellent. The chef came out and greeted us, twice. As well, the manager of the restaurant came by the table and described many of the selections. Then they brought us wonderful food! In the end, they made us this excellent beet ice cream/ goat cheese pie dessert. Home made and very unique. Very good, as well. So overall the service and food was excellent. The food was particularly original and unique. Now, the beer.... the brewery is small for a micro brewery, however is nice size to support the restaurant and maybe a second restaurant in the future? Lots to choose from in the beer category. However, the Utah alcohol laws require no beer served on draft at greater than 4% alcohol. I am a brewer, myself, and I know it is very difficult to make a truly great beer as 4% limits the amount of hops and grains that can be used. Thus, making a beer 4% or less has to be done very, very carefully. Avenues Proper does a good job at this, but I would highly consider you buy one of the bottled beers... and they have a great selection of Belgians and other beer for the connoisseur. I will only ding them a little on price. Plates are small... do not visit Avenues Proper with a tight wallet... splurge a little and you will be very happy.

This is one of our favorite places in SLC, and I'd probably go every week if I had no concern for my waistline. I think they brew the most inventive beers in town, and there's always something new to try when we go. All of the beer I've had has been very solid and a couple of them have been excellent. They're definitely not letting Utah's laws hamper their creativity, and it's great to get something on tap that's not a pale ale or a porter. If you're not in the mood for draft beer, they have a lot of bottles to choose from and a good selection of cocktails/spirits as well. The food is also good. We can't help but get the fries every time we visit, and you get a giant plate for a very reasonable price. Also, the beer float for dessert is a must-try! The rest of the menu is a little on the pricier side, but I'm willing to pay a little more for quality. The ambiance is really nice, not too stuffy or hipster and inviting. I also appreciate that we can go in straight from playing tennis or biking in our workout clothes and we never get looked down upon. The hostesses and servers are always friendly and pretty attentive as well. It's a winner!

We ate here several months ago and had a good experience but we went again tonight and I was totally underwhelmed. Although the restaurant was somewhat empty at 8:30 at night and several tables were open, service was slow for drinks and food. Every dish our table ordered with the exception of the fish was pretty mediocre. And this place is expensive, especially for Utah. I've spent less in Manhattan for better quality food. A pint of beer is $8 and up. A bowl of soup was $9, and smaller than a "cup" at other restaurants. I would avoid this place unless you go for the chicken and waffles, or go for a sandwich at lunch. There are lots of other places in Utah to get better food and better service for less.

comped duckfat popcorn just cause! great service from brian and, of course, the lovely bartender/manager britt j. my wife and i enjoyed some sun chokes to start and a bottle of erath. affordable wines by the bottle and incredible specials. i should've jumped on the salmon - my wife gobbled up the kobe beef medallions w/ frites and i "settled" with the super savory lamb atop root vegetables. stuffed and happy. thanks, avenues proper for a wonderful friday night! *there's a tv in the bar. so nice to not have one on the floor. the ambience of that place feels more like SOMA than your familiar SLC vibe. wonderfully designed. and someday maybe we'll get to see that bartender behind ye ol' zion curtain released!

Good beer selection, cool vibe. I saw hipsters. Not being from SLC, I didn't think I'd see hipsters. I had corn gnocchi and it was one of my top favorite dishes ever. Ever. We had good service. The only downside was that it was very loud.

Third time is not the charm My third visit to this establishment was short of a disaster. The service has not improved at all. We waited about 10 minutes on a Friday night to get a table, which was not bad at all. The hostess however seemed to be rushed and uppity. Her attitude just rubbed us the wrong way. We had ordered our food including some beer. The beer came to the table promptly but our food took exactly 37 minutes from the time we ordered. How do I know the exact time? On my previous visits here, the service was extremely slow and on this visit, I decided to time them. Uggh!! Can't they get their act together and get better service. I also thought the food will improve slightly but I guess that was just wishful thinking. The food was overly stylized without any substance to them. Meaning the food was salty and greasy. The check did not come out until 25 minutes after we finished the meal. It was painfully slow... My last time at this place. I try to visit local eateries and shops but this one I will try to avoid.

Being in the neighborhood, my lady and I frequent this spot. We love the atmosphere and the house-made craft beers. I've found the food to be a little inconsistent, but varies from quite good to amazing. I haven't been disappointed yet. Try the Stout Float for dessert. It's a game changer.

DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR HEALTHY FOOD!! I hope one day to rewrite this review as AP gets a lot of things right, except the food. The servers were friendly, the ambiance was really nice, patio is beautiful, drinks were creative and delicious. I eat a plant based diet for health after my oncologist advised me if I'd like to decrease my risk of my cancer coming back, eat real food mostly plants. I have my places I frequent but on occasion I like to go out with friends and try new places. Most of the time I am pleasently surprised by the willingness of restaurants to make a plant based dish. At Avenues Proper however I was sorely disappointed. After going back and forth with the server and the cook to find at least ONE dish (that was not a salad, sometimes people want hot food) that did not have animal products I was offered a veggie sandwich, as their veggie burger is made with egg. The sandwich was incredibly bland and tasteless, but cost $10 all the same. I will not go back and I recommend anyone trying to eat for your health not visit this place. One day the last 50 years of research and scientific data that supports eating real food mostly plants will reach the mainstream and beautiful places like this will have a hot plant based meal that is worth the high price tag. This however is not that day.

I really enjoyed this place. Liked the interior. Noise level was moderate. There are too many places where it's hard to have a conversation. The food was fun and great! So was the drinks. They make their own beer and they have some interesting ones you can't find anywhere else. They serve local cider and they make great cocktails. Perfect restaurant for a foodie!

Yum. Serious, delicious, fresh, local yum. Tasty local beer. Maybe not the best beer in town, but incredibly fresh because they brew it right there and in a couple of weeks, they'll have chocolate smoked porter. Read that again. Yeah. My husband and I went last night for the first time, after trying their beer out at the Beer Fest. We'd been meaning to get there before, and now I wish we had. Great service. Our server knew the menu very well and remembered that we were pescetarian. He offered good advice. Service could have been a bit swifter, but really it was good. Love the atmosphere. Clean lines, nice wood. Brewery in the middle of the room. Don't listen to the haters. And now the food. Maybe we just ordered well, but we had some delicious food. We split the Welsh rarebit, which came out on toasts, which I didn't expect. Beer, cheese and bread. What's not to like? Not too heavy. Great for a starter. I ordered the fresh tomato salad, which was just incredibly good. The chef got out of the way and let the local, perfect tomatoes speak for themselves, with a little help from some cheese and olive oil. Yay. I also ordered the crudo, which was a particular kind of salmon served on compressed melon with thinly sliced hot peppers and some kind of green pesto. Perfect. Husband ordered the gnocchi, which last night were served with cherry tomatoes and zucchini. Nicely carmelized and the zucchini were fresh and local. Pricey? A bit, but SLC is trying to play with the big kids here, and it's restaurants like this that will put us on the map. We'll be back.

I must preface this review with I have not actually eaten at the establishment yet. This isn't due to lack of trying. We tried to go on Monday, not realizing that they were closed on Monday. We tried again on Tuesday but had logistical problems getting there. Finally we tried on Thursday. After spending 30 minutes trying to park we were turned away at the door. The entire restaurant had been closed for a private party. There was no indication they were going to be closed on their website and they had no sign in front of the establishment or on the door indicating they were closed to the public. I don't think we will try again.

Beer is Delish!! Food is mediocre at best. Majority is fried, portions are too small and the entire menu is outrageously over priced. A burger for $15!! My husband and I ordered an appetizer, two entrees and 3 drinks and our bill was $80!!! The service was good and the ambience is good. We left hungry. We will not be going back.

We were excited for a neighborhood casual spot. This place is $50 per person for shared apps, an entree, two glasses of wine & a shared desert. It's more high end than brewpub except the food high end quality. I'd rather go to Pago or Copper Onion for less $$. Pork loin for $20, Ragu not fully cooked. Chicken bland. I hate libby stemware for beer & wine. I guess I was just hoping for an affordable casual place to go on a Wenesday or Thursday in my neighborhood.

This place has been a long time coming (and highly anticipated) . Today they had an open house to welcome the neighborhood that included some "bites" to try. They had Charming Beard Coffee on-site to serve free coffee (which is also a regular on the menu). The restaurant is GORGEOUS. They are brewing their own beer which will be available in May and their menu is amazing! Unfortuantely the kitchen wasn't open today but they officially open for dinner tonight and will hopefully be adding lunch to the menu too. The atmosphere is great. They had a great eye for decorating without throwing a theme in your face and the bar is awesome. There is one TV for sports (which is a plus because I hate places with too many TVs. We really only need one guys). The gentlemen that own it are super nice and eager to be a part of the local community (one has been a resident of the aves for 22 years) and it seems like they get what a local is looking for. It is higher end atmosphere with reasonable prices and a good vibe. This could easily become a local favorite for us (especially since I live down the street and it's attached to Hatch chocolate! bonus!) Ok! Now I can review the food! We've been there twice now for dinner (not open for lunch yet so don't go before 5pm! I'd call first to make sure they are open). The food is a bit pricer than the average meal but if you are going out to dinner, you should be able (and willing) to pay 15-20 for a plate or you should probably just stay home. Also, the food here is upscale and the ingredients are high end so you are truly paying for what you get. We got the following: Special - half an artichoke - SO GOOD. Comes with a delightful aioli. Small Plate - Chicken and Waffle - fancy and tasty! They didn't drown it in syrup, rather it is placed on the side of the plate to dip into and the chicken was beautifully seasoned. Plate - split the burger! best thing on the menu! They make their own buns, the beef is from grass fed cows and they put an in-house tomato paste on it that is a lovely addition. Ask for a substitution of their ale chips (way better than the basic fries) Beer - beer list is great! their stout is fermenting and should be ready at the end of May. They have three other beers on their way too. Dessert- we were too full but their desserts sound amazing and we plan to go back just for that. stout icecream? yes please.

Chicken and waffles is not an easy dish to perfect (you heard me, IHOP, now stop it), but Avenues Proper is killing it with this dish. I had that with a glass of their brewed-on-site beer, and my day was made!

I have been to the Proper three times hoping it would get better and it hasn't. The service is SLOW! As other reviews have said, the food is so-so and portion size is small for the price. I am not a lover of huge portions but when you get fish sticks for a group and they come out with four pieces the size of small french fries... there is a problem. Save your money and go next door for some great ice cream.

The meal started off great w a delicious take on cheese fries, but quickly went downhill from there. The salmon salad was mediocre and the gnocchi was terrible- pretty hard to mess up gnocchi. Our friends had the short rib which he thought was a little dry, but the pork was OK. In the end, I felt like they were trying too hard to put a unique spin on pub food and missing, when they could've just stuck w the original and done really well. Because of the higher price, I don't think I'd go back or really recommend this place to others.

We live literally a block from Proper and cannot even begin to explain how excited all of us in the neighborhood were at the prospect of eating at a local pub and enjoying homemade beer.....and walking home! First time, failure (okay it was opening night, so we gave it a pass). Awful service overpriced food with some dishes that belong in an upscale Manhattan resturant. Second time, failure. Awful service. We tried the cheese platter which had literally two pieces of burnt bread and two thin slices of cheese. We asked the waitress where the cheese came from and she had no idea. You want a decent cheese platter go to Wild Grape in The Aves. Third time......we warned our waitress of our disappointment nights one and two. Again, failure. It took half an hour to get their "homemade Chips" all eight of them and 20 minutes to get an overly priced local brew because their licensing for serving their own was poorly researched to commence with opening. Fourth time, failure. We got there super early to give them the benefit of the doubt. The bartender looked confused (even though he is not really behind a real bar) the service was awful and the food was salty. We so wanted this place to be great. Come on owners. You are a brewpub. Get the menu to represent one at a brewery! The burger is okay, but nothing to makes ones socks roll up and down for the outrageous price. Hopefully this will serve as a wake up call to the owners ( who are quite nice)and immediate changes to the business model are considered soon!

I think we can all agree that Salt lake is dying for gastropubs of any kind, with that being said I think Avenues Proper may have reached a bit too high, pricing out a lot of potential customers. $14 burgers and such may go over a little better downtown in a more upscale setting. From the outside this place looks like a dentists office and inside while its a nice industrial setting its just not that inviting for more than a brew-pub and not exactly upscale dining. I understand what is trying to be done here I just think they may need to dial it back a bit and take a look at food and drink prices. The service was really attentive- I don't think I have ever seen that many refills on water in 35 minutes :)

I went to Avenues Proper last evening, for the first time. I will return, and regularly. I read other reviews this morning, and was surprised by some. I thought all the food was terrific. I recommend the pate; the duck fat popcorn was great; the welsh rarebit also fabulous. All three of these items are menu-listed as starters. The hamburger was $14 as noted by one of the reviewers--and worth every penny. No where is Salt Lake can one get a gourmet burger better than this one. My pal and I were equally impressed. By the way, the "nano" brews were as good as the food. Don't miss this one. L.

We went for dinner on a Saturday evening and sat outside. Our server Micah was very friendly. We wanted to try their beers, so we started with the Leipziger Gose and a Blue Moon-like wheat beer (can't remember what it was called). The Gose is unusual because it's brewed with salt, and it's kind of sour, but it was really interesting, and we both really liked it. We'll probably go back to try it again sometime soon. For our second round, we tried the other two beers on tap, an IPA and a red oatmeal ale (I think). The IPA was a very nice IPA. My husband loves IPAs, and I don't love them, but we both enjoyed it. It wasn't super bitter but had lots of floral hops flavor. The red ale was probably the least remarkable beer of the evening, but it was nice enough. The food was quite good, and the portions were small enough that we could try several things. We recently moved from Chicago, so the prices seemed very reasonable to us. I guess some other people have different frames of reference, so it seemed expensive to some of the other reviewers. We had fries, which were crispy and nicely salted, the heirloom tomato salad, and the Welsh rarebit to start. The tomatoes were outstanding! Then we split the chicken and waffles. The fried chicken sausage was great (and I'm not a huge chicken fan), and the waffle was perfectly cooked. The people at the table next to ours got the chevre salad, and it looked great. We'll probably try it next time. We didn't get to try any dessert because we were full by the end of all the other food. Sitting outside was nice and relaxed, and we got to enjoy the late afternoon/early evening sun. Nice date night dinner.

Let me start by saying my husband and I were very hungry when we went (which makes almost everything taste good), but I'm still craving some of the food. We went for lunch for my husband birthday. The server acknowledged his birthday but nothing else happened (we usually score a freebee at other places when we go for birthdays but oh well). I wish the online menu was updated because I was going to order the roasted eggplant sandwich but when we got to the restaurant it wasn't listed on the menu, the menu was slightly different. We ordered the fish sticks which really really good so was their tartar sauce. I was just hoping the portion was going to be bigger, like 6 pieces instead of 4 pieces. The soup of the moment was curried sweet potato and it was delicious! It was the highlight of what we ordered. We shared the tri-tip sandwich and it was really good too. I didn't see any vegetarian option for sandwiches so we settled for meet. We prefer vegetarian dishes so if we were very strict on our vegetarianism we would have been quite upset with the lack of option the menu. I wish they had more hot plate options for lunch. I'm definitely planning on going but for dinner to see how different the menu is. I'm glad this place is in the avenues, especially after the closure of the Avenues Bistro. We were planning on going somewhere else but because of the snow we decided to stay on our neighborhood. We need more eateries in the Aves!

I am glad we found this place on the way to the airport! We stopped in for brunch which is a new addition to their line up. Great selection, accommodating for gluten-free, and friendly service. The bloody mary was pretty great, too! Definitely give it a try for brunch.

Space - dimly lit, rust colored walls, very gastropub chic, local art adorned the walls and was available for purchase. Drinks.... I tried three of their drafts. The goze, the amber, and a lager. The goze is well....Sour, like drinking sour patch kids. The amber has no body whatsoever. I can only describe it as thin and lacking in substance. The lager was better than a bud light, but is a waste of money at $6 a pint. Apps..... We had a crudite plate, a wagyu carpaccio, and the pale ale chips. The carpaccio was really quite good. They went out of their way to pickle an indigenous succulent, which was clever (albeit underwhelming). The crudite was passable, but presented no memorable bites. The eggplant was finally eaten by our group, because everyone was hungry enough. The pale ale chips were oily and had the flavor of french fries from unchanged oil. All apps are very small, so plan accordingly. Entree....There isn't much to choose from, but I went with the much touted burger. The fries were actually very good and were paired with a garlic aioli??? dipping sauce. It was the best part of the dish. The burger was a disaster. I love gourmet burgers.....this is not one of them. I ordered it medium...two others ordered medium well. A different staff member showed up with the three burgers for the group. I asked for the medium one....she stared blankly at me and handed me a plate. It was well done....practically no juice left in it. The bun might have been a bright spot, but it was charred, not toasted. I actually stripped the outer edge off to get rid of the ash flavor. Things went from bad to worse when I got a mouthful of the tomato jam. It was coated an 1/8 of an inch thick on the bun. It was sweet to say the least. It is something akin to a tomato and heinz ketchup puree. Needless to say good meat shouldn't be doused in such things. Then again good meat should never be well done. I left 2/3 of it on the plate. It was the first time in my life that I actually refused to eat a burger. :( Oh, and it was 15 bucks, which in UT is a king's ransom for a burger. I feel a little violated, so much so that I signed up for a yelp account and wrote this my first review. By the way, tab was 160+ before tip for a party of four, and we went next door to buy chocolate afterward.

I am giving Avenues Proper a 4 for now since I haven't tried the food yet, however I based on the times I have been there I would prefer to give it a 3. The beer is decent. I had the Gose which is a sour beer. It was really sour and very salty which was satisfying on a warm summer night. To satisfy "Utah Law" we ordered the pickle appetizer. Really can't complain too much but it was honestly one pickle, one artichoke heart, and one cippolioni onion for $3. We wanted to order the pretzels but they were out, as well as one of the beers and other menu items. My real complaint was the service. I am not originally from Utah and have noticed the hospitality section severely lacks in personality and competence. Our waitress seemed extremely annoyed and was exceptionally inattentive (the restaurant was not extremely busy). We would have ordered more beer but she hardly came to our table and when we finally did order she never came back with the drinks. We finally flagged her down and closed our tab which of course was enormous as this restaurant is not cheap. I was excited to have a brewery in the neighborhood but really don't feel $5 pints of beer are worth the lack of service. As stated earlier, I am still a fan of this location and once I am able to try the food I will reassess the review, although I am assuming it may be awhile before I head back.

We ate here this evening. Our waitress was well informed and knew the menu. Two of our meals were not served when the other 7 meals were served. Instead of being honest and saying they had not made the meals they told us, " they would be done in a few minutes." After 15 minutes and everyone else was done I had my meal delivered, but my friend waited an additional 5 minutes. The owners even stopped by while we were waiting for our meals and failed to come back and tell us the scoop! I had to ask to have my meal comped and they should have comped my friend's meal also. On top of all this the waitress added on her gratuity ( too bad because she would of had more)!!! What should have been done: 1. been honest...tell me you are a new restaurant and you screwed up 2. Brought some food to tide me over while I waited. 3. Comped the 2 meals 3. The owners should have returned with their explanation and apologies. The food was good but pricey. Servings are small except the hamburgers, which are huge! I had the halibut which was moist but a very small portion! My husband had the gnocchi and found it bland. I'd wait to the one chef comes back from Europe because they need way more experience in understanding that the restaurant business is not the brewery business!

I only had two dishes but they were only OK. I don't understand why this place has so many good reviews. The ambiance is beautiful. The patio is awesome, but that's about it. Had the chicken and waffles. If you gave this dish more than 2 stars, I'm guessing you have never had chicken and waffles in the south. They took a great classic dish and made it weird. The chicken was made into a buffalo chicken sausage? Was interesting, but regular fried chicken would have been so much better. For decent chicken and waffles in SLC, I suggest going to Pig and a Jelly Jar in Sugar House. The quail egg was good. Waffle was good. Nothing spectacular. The big disappointment was the salmon salad. It was listed as an entree and cost $15, but was barely the size of an app. If there is one thing I can't tolerate, it's the need to eat a burger after my meal because the dish was so small and unsatisfying. Overall, pretty place but not worth the price.

I ordered the lamb sandwich and it was the worst sandwich I've ever eaten. It was all fat and no meat. The first bite was so chewy and tasteless. I thought I just got the a bad piece of meat, but I checked the rest of the sandwich and it was the same. The waiter was pleasant and offered to get me something different, but by then I just lost my appetite. The beer was alright and the atmosphere was nice, but I probably won't go back again. There are so many other places in Salt Lake to go to for good food, beer and are reasonably priced.

Great meal and service - while it is a gastropub - the bill will feel more like haute cuisine - fortunately there is some superlative cooking going on here and amazingly the best was last - the goat cheese pie with beet sorbet was astonishing - perfect texture - great subtle flavore and something to be remembered - I hope they keep this on the menu forever - sure - change everything else at your whim but to remove this would be like wrecking the Taj Mahal

My friends and I have given this place three tries. We truly want it to succeed. We have high hopes everytime we to but it always disappoints. We were excited to try their new line of microbrews, brewed on the premises. The stout was good, very similar to Desert Edge' Latter Day Stout with a finish coffee finish. The ale was a bit lacking for our tastes. Seemed flat and lackluster in flavor. All the beers were ordered were served too warm for our taste. We ordered a number of small plates to try - the cheese 7.00 was one slab of cheese with some toast and jam. The waffles and chicken looked good, tasted fine, but we couldn't believe didn't serve it with maple syrup! We also tried the fish sticks -- five pieces about the size of your pinky finger, fries were good, and rarebit was ok. Finally, the service was incredibly SLOW and we had to keep trying to get our servers attention. Again, we left disappointed and poorer for the experience. Three times is enough. From now on we'll head down to The Avenues Bistro on 3rd, much better value, outdoor seating, and a downstairs Speakeasy. APP needs work.

My friend and I have been anticipating the opening of Avenues Proper for quite sometime and I was blown away by what we experienced. We started off with multiple small plates; the elk carpacchio and pork belly were UNBELIEVABLE. But I'd have to say that the chicken and waffles with a fried egg was something I would go back for on a daily basis. We then moved on to the burger which was excellent. It was juicy and so flavorful! We finished with the gnocchi, also excellent. The gnocchi is exactly what you always hope for when you order this dish, soft pillows that melt in your mouth, not chewy at all. I have been a long time fan and resident of the Avenues. The forward thinking and eclectic mix of neighbors makes it a beautiful and interesting place to live. I believe Avenues Proper is the perfect addition and will help enhance and stay true what we all love about the area. You have to visit...and DO NOT forget to try the chicken and waffles! Excellent service and cocktails as well, I can't wait for the in-house brewed beer!

(5)Sarah V.

(1)Lo B.
Avenues Proper ends up being a bit greasy no matter what I order. I've stopped coming in because the price is too high for what you get. That said the Wait Staff is awesome, the food is good, and the idea of having restaurants in the neighborhood is always appealing.

This place is worth every penny! Me and a friend had so much fun splitting different dishes. you have to try the cauliflower fritters!!!!

(3)Chad J.
(2)Angelica R.
(5)Adam C.
(2)Matthew D.
Excellent service, great beer and very good food! Great place for local brew. Our server, Jackie knew the menu and had very good recommendations. We will be back!
(4)A Sniggs G.
An amazing dinner at Aves proper! Jackie took really good care of us. And the, Food was out of this world! Beer is a must try and so are the chicken and waffles! Will not be disappointed!
(5)Traci P.
(2)Joe M.
Delicious craft beer. Perfect pub food. We need more local places like this in SLC. Avenues Proper is doing it right.
(5)Liam C.

(1)Lauren S.
This is my favorite restaurant in salt lake. Great food, cool location and good beer. Consistently love it.
(5)Jennifer S.
First time here. Our waiter at the bar immediately made us feel welcome. Poutine was some of the best I've had. Salted Carmel porter was yummy. Great atmosphere and great service and food. Can't wait to come back.
(5)Dede V.
(5)Mark M.
Love this place for brunch. Service has been good, the food is delicious and the mimosas are 3 dollars. I will come back again and again. Both times I had the Benedict, and it is fantastic.
(5)Austin D.
(4)Ben S.
For the last year since getting their new chef, this place has been consistently very good. It's a reliable staple. Good menu, bar (with sports) or restaurant are both great
(5)Bud H.
I have mixed feelings about this place. First off, the space is very nice and heaven only knows the Avenues can use a few more eateries like this. Also, the menu is packed with items that sound delicious; so many good-sounding dishes that it was hard to choose just one. Based on my first impression, I was certain I would be clamoring to come back soon. With that said, many of the items we tried were not as good as I was hoping, or perhaps expecting. My wife and I started with the Shellfish Frites and our friends had the Rarebit Frites. Let me just say, the frites were delicious; I really, really enjoyed them. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just as a fry should be. Our shellfish, on the other hand, was not so good. The dish had an intense "fishy" taste that was just plain bad. I know what fresh shellfish taste like and this was not it. In fact, we didn't finish them, which is pretty much unheard of for a small bowl of clams or mussels. For my entrée I had the Beer-Braised Short Ribs and I thought it was pretty good. However, while the beef was cut-it-with-your-fork tender, it was still slightly dry. It also had a slight gamey taste, which was off-putting. I would have enjoyed a bit more sauce than what was served with the dish to combat the dryness and gaminess, but on the whole, it was decent. It was definitely helped by the tasty sides. My wife enjoyed her Pork Tenderloin and I must say, I thought it was delicious too. Our friends shared the Gnocchi and a salad and they stated both items were good, but not great. They thought the gnocchi was perhaps more crusty (i.e., pan-fried and slightly dry) than you'd expect, and after tasting a bite, I tended to agree with them. By now, hopefully one can understand why I rated this place as I did. A couple items were really good, one was really bad, and the rest fell someplace in between. So although the menu is packed with great-sounding items, I'm a little uncertain if they are really as good as they happen to sound. I must admit, however, that if I lived in the area I'm certain I'd visit this place often and eventually try every item on the menu to find out for myself. But seeing as I don't, I'm not quite sure how much of a hurry I'm in to find out.

(3)Brett P.
Holy Pork Carnitas Enchiladas!!! Wow, has this place gone from overpriced good to fabulous give me more!!! Food is still excellent but their small plates are the best deal in town. Kudos to Proper!!!
(5)Brian H.
(5)Raymond C.
(1)Michelle R.

I'd like to get this out of the way regarding Avenues Proper - I'm from California and when I read all the reviews that commented on the high prices at this restaurant I prepared myself. One minute into the menu I had to chuckle out loud. It is not an expensive restaurant. My friend and I had the chicken and waffles with the quail egg for our appetizer and split the hamburger. I loved the chicken and waffles and we both agreed we should have doubled down and got the larger portion. I was pro burger but my friend was "meh," however I think this was because our burger was cooked more on the rare side than medium (big baby). I had the Unita Double Black IPA and I was super happy with my choice. Service was okay, nothing to write home about, our server had some friends in the restaurant and seemed to be very keen on visiting them and not checking in with us in often. Totally personal note but both my friend and I commented on how the décor of the place seemed all over the place. The lighting fixtures, furniture, color scheme, and wall treatments just did not mesh. Trite and random, I know, but those things matter in the end.
(3)Andrew S.
(4)Joe D.
Pretty cool atmosphere! The food was great! We started with the Pork Belly Sliders, Chips, Fries, and Crab Dip for appetizers. The Proper Burger was delicious! #avenuesproper #gastropub #slc #801 #casualdining
(5)Nick L.
(3)Ryan D.
(5)Kyle K.
(4)Courtney R.
I love the food here! I try something new every time, and there are some real gems on the menu. The cocktail list is also great.
(5)Justin C.
Came here when it first opened, and I was a little underwhelmed. Recently returned, and it seemed a lot better. I had a gnocchi that was fantastic, and saw several other items I want to try. The house-brewed beer was also great. Most of the other recent reviews seem really positive as well.
(4)Brian M.
I liked the beer but wasn't impressed by the food. Overpriced and very average. Service is slow. I had high hopes for this place but unfortunately wasn't satisfied. I won't be going back
(2)Dorothy C.
(5)Paul C.
(4)Ty M.
Tried the proper burger and of course i have to add bacon. It was great and cooked exactly how i asked for it. My friend had the chicken and waffles and he said it was five stars all the way. Its a beautiful building all the way! I will be happy to come back! Now to order some togo.
(5)Sam S.
Great seasonal menu and they're open late. What's not to love? The pot roast with polenta is incredible and their brunch is pretty tasty too
(5)Mary M.
(5)Lisa S.
I wouldn't know what the food tastes like, but for the the third time I tried to eat there and was not greeted to be seated. They have the worst service and i will never go back to try them!
(1)Brad M.
Loved the food, I had the chicken sausage biscuit. Very tasty. Went for Sunday brunch so get there around 10:30am
(5)Kylie C.
(3)Brent M.
How have I not rated this place? We come here often and just realized I haven't rated on Yelp. Everything I've eaten here is absolutely top notch, from preparation to presentation to the premium ingredients sourced. I'm not sure how anyone could give this place less than a 4 star rating. Great local beer!!
(5)Nick C.
(5)Amanda W.
(2)Taylor F.

(5)Jessica M.
(3)Damian S.
Pretentious buttercup food. Ok beer, but need work on the menu. Simple can be better!
(2)Carl C.
Chicken n Waffles are a must Coffee stout was super tastey Pom frites are dynomite Atmosphere is trendy Service impeccable.
(4)Blair S.

Awesome place, awesome food, awesome beer. Gose the Gozerian with truffle popcorn could just be the best thing ever.

5 stars. Here's the deal: We have only been here twice, once for brunch and once for dinner. The service is really great. Very genuine and knowledgeable staff. We had Josh as our server during brunch. He was just great. We got the vegetable hash and the proper breakfast. Tasty! $3 bloody mary! The bubble & squeak was something we'd never had before and had only heard of-potatoes and cheese, fried. Yea. Really delicious. A neat surprise. For dinner, Micah was our server. So friendly from the start. We got the duck fat popcorn, which honestly was just okay, but a really cool novelty dish. The rarebit frites surpassed expectations. I was thinking...cheese fries? No thanks. But, Micah recommended them. Kind of like poutine-fries with a cheesy gravy topped with bacon. Yum. The black bean & sweet potato veggie burger with ghost pepper cheese was something I didn't expect to get...or like, but I was quite pleased. The spiciness was a perfect pinch of power on the pallet to becon: I shall not be forgotten. The chicken entrée was also tasty. As was the frozen key lime pie finish. The whole meal didn't disappoint. Way better service than we got at a restaurant we used to love, Copper Onion. I'll be changing that positive review soon.

(2)Ayla K.
Very good food and friendly service. The beer selection is great. The bourbon and beer flight is worth trying. Wish the portions were a bit bigger for some of the dishes, but we've enjoyed every meal we've had here.
(4)John L.
Great food. Chicken & waffles was savory and sweet! The gnocchi was interesting but amazing. Definitely worth a visit. Get the flight of beers and liquor. Don't question it, just do it.
(5)Anne E.

(4)Annie W.
My friend and I shared three apps and an entree AND large beer for about $50. This place is bound to be an avenues treasure. Good food, and I can't wait for their house beer.

I had to edit the review after coming here recently, my opinion has definitely changed. Portions are better. Tastes great!
(5)Micah B.

(5)Scott T.
(2)Laird B.
(4)Kelsey H.
(4)Bill B.
Had a wonderful cocktail here! It doesn't have a club license, so you've got to order appetizers to keep drinking, but luckily they're delicious. Pricy, but pleasant experience in one of the very few Avenues places to serve liquor. That was unheard of just a few years ago.
(4)K J.

(5)Sarah S.
(5)Alecia M.
An overly wordy menu, expensive, small portions, unwelcoming atmosphere. A beautiful building, but uncomfortable seating and a feel of uppitiness made it a "just alright" experience for me.
(2)Jeff L.
(2)John Nielsen B.
comped duckfat popcorn just cause! great service from brian and, of course, the lovely bartender/manager britt j. my wife and i enjoyed some sun chokes to start and a bottle of erath. affordable wines by the bottle and incredible specials. i should've jumped on the salmon - my wife gobbled up the kobe beef medallions w/ frites and i "settled" with the super savory lamb atop root vegetables. stuffed and happy. thanks, avenues proper for a wonderful friday night! *there's a tv in the bar. so nice to not have one on the floor. the ambience of that place feels more like SOMA than your familiar SLC vibe. wonderfully designed. and someday maybe we'll get to see that bartender behind ye ol' zion curtain released!
(5)T V.

(1)Brian S.

Great food. Great beer.
(5)Louise J.
(5)Christie F.

Too Salty and too expensive for what your get.
